Re: [Expats-in-Cagayan-de-Oro] Mike-Mike's Post RE: So you want to be a bar owner!!

The answer to most of this is yes.

The last par is a NO, doing business in CDO is done without that.  During the middle of 2010 i received a lot of unwanted attention from Manila based operatives who found they made a very big mistake and now face charges with the office of the ombudsman. the office of the Mayor and Vice mayor were very supportive as was Herbie at the Goldstar. The type of support missing in other places.

The city even has adopted its own by laws that state that CIDG are not allowed to conduct activity in the city unless approved in writing and in cooperation with the City, ie no cowboying. The City poice are not allowed to enter bars unless on official duty ie called in on emergency etc. Only Anti Vice have free passage and are the only individuals allowed to be armed.

CDO is for me a good place to do business. I am sure there ae many other business people bars or not who feel the same.

Now you know why when walking ino some bars in other places it is well over 100 pesos for the humble SMB!!.  You are all paying for the cost of additional expenses!!

Mike - Does the "normal price to operate" = 'bribes'?

Is this 'insider bar owners' info (meaning just bar owners
would know about it) - or

Are the 'bribes and amounts' quasi 'public information'
(means lots of folks would know about it)?

Does this type stuff go on in CDO?

Just received this from Cebu, not good reading!!

"I spent this past weekend in Cebu and it is not good news. 2010 is a big election year and to win a election in the Philippines cost big money.

I talked to three bar owners/managers and all told the same story. Folicks has sent all the girls home, Love Star is closed, Mermaids and Hot Rods are for sale. The price of doing business just went up. The normal price to operate is around 150,000P a month and now with the elections they upped the price to 350,000 a month (200,000P for the Mayor). I was told that they just can't afford to operate. Everytime that a deal is made, another person walks in and wants a cut"

I expect that Folics is Frolics bar and that Love Star is Lone Star.

I think any thoughts on Cebu expansion for Spooks is now deep freezed in the middle of Antarctica
