Ron,
Sometimes
I wonder if it is NOT a bad thing, a certain blogger we know would of
course be crying into his panty hose over it, do I care?
Perhaps
if bloggers and others were held responsible for what they say and do
before it goes legal etc it may not be a bad thing.
The price to be paid would of course be too high for anyone who rejects censorship of any type etc
I
remember a former political home secretary being told that the net must
be censored and suggested that they would not be opening the mail in
the post office to see what is written so he will not authorize opening
individual mail accounts etc. He was and
is correct.
sadly the
abusers be it personal or corporates the spam the spam etc can take a
bow of shame as they are in my view responsible for this

Subject: [Expats-in-Cagayan-de-Oro] World Wide Web to Be Censored?
This is Serious! Please read - take action.
We obviously all use the web. It keeps us connected.
Helps us make decisions. It's been a good thing.
But it may all be about to change.
But it may all be about to change.
The US Congress is about to consider legislation
that will permit a government 'someone' - some
where - to have the authority to censor the web -
that will permit a government 'someone' - some
where - to have the authority to censor the web -
even closing web sites for subjective 'violations'
- in theory, maybe even Yahoo Groups.
And if the so-called 'Open Society USA' - starts
censoring - you can imagine what other folks
will start doing. It's a very slippery slope.
Ostensibly, the purpose of the law (if enacted) is
to 'protect' web users.
But a cynical look could imply that the real reason
for the push is coming from old, big money companies
that are getting whammed by an uncensored web:
for example - print newspapers and magazines, film
guys, TV stations, huge music conglomerates.
The attached article is from WORD PRESS, that may
be responsible for about 15% of the world's web sites.

There has been scuttlebutt that the really big web
guys like Yahoo, Google, Microsoft and the like are
discussing closing the web down for 24 hours to try
and get these folks attention in Congress.
Money and campaign contributions talk - but maybe
no re-election talks louder.
This a nasty piece of business... that could affect
the rest of your life on the Web.
Read - send the note.
